Does window tint keep your car cooler?

BEAK Automotive · Updated November 7, 2026

The short answer

Yes. Ceramic window tint blocks most of the infrared light that you feel as heat, plus about 99% of UV, so less of the sun's energy gets into the cabin. The car heats up more slowly when parked and the air conditioning catches up faster. It won't keep a car cool in the sun on its own, and the windshield, usually left untinted, still lets heat in.

Where the heat comes from

Sunlight carries energy as visible light, infrared and UV. Infrared is the part you feel as warmth on your arm through the window. Ceramic film is built to block infrared while still letting through a lot of visible light, which is why even a light 70% ceramic film cuts heat.

Does a darker shade block more heat?

A little, because it blocks more visible light too. But with ceramic film most of the heat rejection comes from the infrared it blocks, which is about the same across shades. So choose the shade for looks, privacy and your state's law, not for heat.

Other benefits

  • Less glare from the sun and from headlights behind you
  • UV protection for skin and the dashboard and seats
  • Privacy, with the darker shades
  • Some help holding shattered side glass together, though standard tint isn't security film

The honest downsides

  • Most states limit how dark the front windows can be, so the front doors usually get a lighter shade.
  • The windshield, the biggest piece of glass, usually can't be tinted except a strip at the top.
